Text-to-Give: Supporting Valley Children’s Hospital on Kids Day
If you've ever driven through Fresno, California and have seen 8,000 enthusiastic volunteers wearing orange aprons, waving at cars, and selling newspapers, you’ve probably arrived on Kids Day.
Since 1988, Valley Children’s Hospital has partnered with ABC30 and The Fresno Bee to orchestrate Kids Day, one of the largest fundraising events in the Central Valley. Raising more than $10.1 million dollars over its 34-year history, Kids Day donations support the greatest needs of the hospital system.
Each year the Kids Day campaign is promoted through a variety of strategic partnerships utilizing in-person events, social media, and mobile fundraising efforts.
"Long-time participants such as schools, businesses, volunteers, grateful families, Valley Children’s Hospital staff, celebrities, and many others in the community took to social media to help spread the word on how to donate virtually to Kids Day."
— Jessica Duarte, Manager, Annual Development at Valley Children's Hospital
Supporters could choose to donate through the Valley Children’s Hospital website, purchasing a special digital version of The Fresno Bee, or use Engage by Cell’s mobile fundraising platform.
With Engage by Cell’s Mobile Give service, the donation only takes 30 seconds to make and is charged to the donor’s cell phone bill. Exclusively for nonprofits, organizations can choose a specific dollar amount to be charged, between five and 50 dollars. Donations can be a one-time event or a monthly recurring gift. There are also options to collect donor information for future fundraising campaigns and community engagement.
For the Kids Day mobile fundraising campaign, donors texted the word GEORGE to the short code 20222 then they received a text response confirming the $10 donation and simply replied “Yes.”
More than 1,400 individual donors used the text-to-give option to donate to 2023 campaigns.
