Training CASA Volunteers Through Mobile Learning Tools

Training CASA Volunteers Through Mobile Learning Tools

How can you produce happy, confident volunteers who know how to do their jobs well?

With a volunteer workforce of more than 96,000 Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), many CASA organizations have turned to Engage by Cell’s mobile technology to train, educate, and communicate.

Each CASA volunteer receives more than 30 hours of training before they work with a child, with an additional 12 hours of continued education required annually.

Given budget constraints, geographic challenges, and limits on in-person meetings, mobile technology is the perfect solution for training CASA volunteers.

CASA of Liberty and Chambers Counties

Just northeast of Houston in Liberty, Texas, the CASA of Liberty and Chambers Counties (CLCC) uses Engage by Cell’s mobile technology for recruiting, training, and text message communication.

Executive Director Kimberly Stephens reports, “We’ve had a fantastic experience using the platform for our training! In fact, in May I will be presenting a training to the rest of the state (Texas CASAs) on how we are using your program to meet continuing education requirements for volunteers.”

As a nonprofit, pricing was very important. Stephens says, “The fact that Engage by Cell was able to offer us such a competitive package was 100% the determining factor in our decision to subscribe.”  Stephens has also found that crime victim grants are often willing to cover 100% of the cost of programs like Engage by Cell’s mobile technology.

CLCC volunteers regularly receive text messages with links to training videos, helpful articles, and relevant resources stored on the mobile training website. In addition, CLCC uses a mobile website to recruit volunteers. By texting CASARECRUIT to 56512, people can explore topics like Advocacy 101, read FAQs, and learn about the application process.

CASA of Tarrant County

In Fort Worth, Texas, the CASA of Tarrant County also uses Engage by Cell’s mobile technology in their “mLearning Platform.”

Their mobile website covers a wide range of topics: teen advocacy, medical advocacy, self care, reunification and many others.

Why Are CASAs Using Mobile?

Time and again, our CASA clients report that mobile technology makes learning more engaging. Plus, when you’ve got important content to share, but nobody has the time, mobile technology makes training convenient.

If training is on your phone, people can access it at the gym, in the car, while getting ready in the morning, or simply waiting in line. Mobile technology puts content in people’s hands when they have the time to spend on it.

Our clients who use mobile websites combined with text message communication are equipped with two powerful tools. The mobile website stores all of the important information. Text messaging is the unavoidable nudge people need to access the content.
