Ask A Mobile Expert: Communicating with a mobile workforce

Mobile is becoming an important tool for companies to communicate and engage with their employees. Text messaging is our fastest growing service. In this month's Ask A Mobile Expert, we discuss the pros and cons of texting and going mobile.

Q: My company is currently looking for a new way to communicate with our employee pool, most of whom are remote. Is a text messaging system the right option for us?
A: Texting allows for instant communication to a wide range of cell phones and there is no need for the user to use up their data. We have over 300 clients that use the text messaging platform - and for a variety of uses! Some clients like to use it for product updates, others for company reminders and performance reports, while some simply have it as an emergency alert system. It is necessary for employees who use their own phones to opt-in to the service by texting in a keyword. We've found that about 75% of employees voluntarily opt-in to their company's text message system. We offer an email solution so that if an employee does not opt-in, they can still receive the notices.

Q: What are some ways we can get our employees to opt-in to the system?
A: The most popular method is to have employees send a text message to auto-enroll. Employees can also add their phone numbers via a web page, which we provide for you. You are also able to upload an Excel spreadsheet through the text message back end.

Q: Text messages only allow for a certain amount of characters. How can I convey a lot of information in a short amount of space?
A: Though a character limit can seem daunting, text messages can be a great way to communicate with employees. Being concise is the key. Ask any teenager, they've mastered the art of sending important messages in 160 characters. However if you feel 160 characters isn't enough, you can always provide a short link to a mobile website, which we can also provide. Check it out here.

Stay tuned for next month's Ask A Mobile Expert, where we discuss the pros and cons of mobile sites.
